Basseterre, St. Kitts-A splendid all round performance from Wasim ‘Boom Boom’ Mentos powered his Empire Cricket Club to a nine wicket victory over Haynes Smith Cricket Club in the Keith Arthurton Windsor Nagico T20 cricket league on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Conaree Cricket Ground in St. Kitts.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Haynes Smith soon regretted the decision as their batsmen struggled to cope with the bowlers of Empire from the outset.

The Haynes Smith innings failed to gather momentum and regularly lost wickets and were scampered out for a mere 80 runs.

Leading the charge with the ball for Empire was Wasin Mentos who bagged three wickets for 20 runs from 2.5 overs. He was supported by T. Nisbett who collected two wickets for eight runs from his four overs while Theron Bussue also grabbed two wickets.

In pursuit of 81 for victory, Mr. Mentos, the leading run scorer in the tournament, shone again with his third half century of the competition as his side eased to a comfortable nine wicket victory. Mentos finished unbeaten on 63 making light work of the Haynes Smith bowlers, often sending the members of the audience into a frenzy with his side reaching their target in 7.2 overs.

Mentos has already played to match winning knocks prior to his latest exploits and in fast becoming a fan favorite in the tournament not only by his performances but also by his positive nature on and off the field.

Earlier in the day, league leaders Newtown Cricket Club held on to their strong grip of the lead with a 29 run victory over the Len Harris Cricket Academy (LHCA).

Electing to bat first Newtown were in trouble at 32-3 but a 60 run partnership between Elsroy Powell and Jason Saddler steadied the ship. Powell however stood out in the innings as he stroked an unbeaten 85 as he pushed his side towards the challenging 192-7.

Bowling for LHCA saw Jerrickson Louis collecting three wickets for 17 runs while his brother Jerrillious grabbing two for 47.

In response a century partnership between Terrance Warde and Darren Hobson looked set to steer the LHCA towards their target until Hobson departed for 29 and sparked a collapsed of their innings. Warde who was the aggressor in the century stand with Hobson eventually departed for 75.

Powell also has a significant contribution with the ball picking up two wickets for 23 runs with his captain Kevin Hanley also collecting two wickets.

The Government Road Pennyless All Stars also scored a big win by defeating defending champions Sandy Point by an 83 run margin.

Batting first All Stars stormed to 181-5 off 20 overs on the back of 52 from Jamie Cornelius and 30 from Tonito Willet.

For Sandy Point Elvin Berridge collected three wickets for 24 runs as his side struggled to contain the opposing batsmen.

With an imposing target the defending champion’s innings showed some promise when opener Greg Stanley was hitting the ball all around the park but with wickets falling around him was the only bright spot in the Sandy Point innings.

The defending champions now face an uphill task to qualify for the knock out phase of the tournament.
